Dock & Boat Lift Installation on Lake Kegonsa

Dock & Boat Lift Installation on Lake Kegonsa

JD Hellenbrand installs, removes, and services docks and boat lifts on Lake Kegonsa. We serve the full shoreline including Stoughton, McFarland, the Town of Pleasant Springs, the Town of Dunn, and the surrounding Lake Kegonsa communities.

Lake Kegonsa is the southernmost of the Yahara chain (the “First Lake” historically, since early settlers traveling north up the Yahara River encountered it first). Its name comes from the Ho-Chunk language and means “Lake of Many Fishes,” and the lake lives up to that description with one of the most productive fisheries in the area.

For dock owners, what matters about Lake Kegonsa is this: it’s the quietest lake in the Yahara chain. Because access from the other Yahara lakes requires passing through the locks, boat traffic on Kegonsa stays significantly lower than on Lake Monona or Lake Mendota. This makes it a different dock environment, with calmer water, less wave-induced wear on dock structures, and a more relaxed seasonal pace.

You don’t need to be home. We document every property with photos before and after the work. Many of our Lake Kegonsa customers are seasonal property owners who aren’t on-site during install or removal weeks. The workflow is built around them.

What We Know About Lake Kegonsa

Lake Kegonsa covers 3,209 acres in southern Dane County with a maximum depth of 32 feet and a mean depth of 17 feet. The bottom composition is approximately 70% sand, 14% gravel, 1% rock, and 15% muck per Wisconsin DNR data. This is excellent dock-installation territory: the predominantly sandy bottom holds pipe dock anchors well, and the moderate depth means most properties reach navigable depth within a reasonable dock length.

Water levels on Lake Kegonsa are managed by the LaFollette Lock and Dam at the lake’s outlet, where the Yahara River exits south toward the Rock River. Inflow comes from Lake Waubesa via Mud Lake and the Yahara River.

The lake’s character is anchored by Lake Kegonsa State Park, a 343-acre park on the lake’s northeast shore with 80 campsites, a public beach, and one of the public boat launches. LaFollette County Park is adjacent to the state park on the eastern shore.

Lake Kegonsa Communities Served

City of Stoughton sits just south of the lake and includes a portion of the shoreline. Stoughton residents make up a meaningful share of our Lake Kegonsa customer base.

Village of McFarland sits between Lake Waubesa and Lake Kegonsa, with several Lake Kegonsa shoreline neighborhoods within McFarland’s reach.

Town of Pleasant Springs covers the northeast portion of the lake including Lake Kegonsa State Park.

Town of Dunn covers a portion of the western shoreline.

Notable lakefront neighborhoods include Camp Columbia, Camp Dewey, Colladay Park, Colladay Point, Crown Point, Crystal Springs Park, Kegonsa Grove, Kegonsa Park, Lee’s Park, Lincoln Park, Orvold’s Park, Pike Front, Quam’s Park, Rock Elm Park, and Shadyside Park.

Spring Installation Timing on Lake Kegonsa

Lake Kegonsa typically freezes in early to mid December and clears in late March or early April. Because it’s smaller and shallower than Lake Mendota or Lake Monona, it freezes a bit earlier and may open up a bit earlier as well. We monitor ice conditions on the lake and begin spring installations as soon as conditions allow.

Spring installation slots fill up fast. Most Lake Kegonsa property owners want their docks in by late April or early May for the start of the boating season. Contact us in February or March to reserve your position on the schedule. Earlier bookings get the earliest install dates.

Yahara Chain Coordination

We run efficient crew routes on the Yahara chain (Lake Monona, Lake Waubesa, Lake Kegonsa). If you own property on multiple Yahara lakes or have neighbors who want to coordinate, we can often schedule Lake Kegonsa work alongside other Yahara installations on the same crew day. This is one of the advantages of working with a contractor that covers all four Madison-area lakes plus Lake Wisconsin.

As an Authorized Hewitt and Endres Dealer

JD Hellenbrand is an authorized dealer for Hewitt and Endres dock and lift systems. We also work with Clearwater Piers and Wave Armor floating dock systems. The predominantly sandy bottom on Lake Kegonsa makes pipe dock systems work especially well here, but we’ll evaluate your specific shoreline before recommending a configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions: Lake Kegonsa Dock Installation

When should I schedule spring dock installation on Lake Kegonsa?

Contact us in February or March. Spring installation typically begins in April as ice-out clears. Getting on the schedule early gives you the best date options. Late bookings sometimes mean a later installation date than you’d prefer, particularly during the busy April-to-mid-May window.

What dock types work well on Lake Kegonsa?

Most Lake Kegonsa properties use aluminum or steel pipe docks. The lake’s predominantly sandy bottom holds pipe anchors well, and the moderate depth means standard dock lengths reach navigable water at most properties. Floating docks are appropriate in some areas where water level variation matters or where soft bottom conditions exist. We assess each property individually.

Do I need a permit for a dock on Lake Kegonsa?

Most residential docks on Lake Kegonsa do not require a Wisconsin DNR permit if they meet standard size and configuration thresholds. The City of Stoughton, Village of McFarland, and surrounding townships may have additional shoreland zoning rules. We flag any permitting questions specific to your property during the consultation.

How does the LaFollette Lock affect Lake Kegonsa water levels and boat traffic?

The LaFollette Lock at the lake’s outlet manages water levels per Dane County and Wisconsin DNR guidelines. Boats can pass through the lock to access Lake Waubesa and the rest of the Yahara chain when conditions allow. This is one reason Lake Kegonsa has lower boat traffic than Lake Monona: the lock is a barrier that keeps day-trippers from easily moving between lakes.

When does Lake Kegonsa freeze and clear of ice?

Lake Kegonsa typically freezes in early to mid December and clears in late March or early April. It freezes earlier than Lake Mendota and Lake Monona because it is smaller and shallower. JD Hellenbrand monitors conditions and adjusts the spring installation schedule accordingly.

Does JD Hellenbrand serve Lake Kegonsa State Park area properties?

We serve private waterfront properties throughout the Lake Kegonsa shoreline, including the residential areas around the state park (the park itself isn’t a private dock customer). The Town of Pleasant Springs and Town of Dunn properties on Lake Kegonsa are within our standard service area.

Can JD Hellenbrand coordinate Lake Kegonsa work with my Lake Waubesa or Lake Monona neighbors?

Yes. JD Hellenbrand runs efficient crew routes on the Yahara chain, and we can often coordinate scheduling across multiple Yahara lakes when neighbors or multi-property owners want to bundle work. Coordinating reduces mobilization costs and gets everyone on the schedule together.

What’s different about a Lake Kegonsa dock compared to a Lake Monona dock?

Two main differences. First, Lake Kegonsa has lower boat traffic, so dock structures see less wave wear over the season. Second, the bottom is predominantly sandy, which is excellent for standard pipe dock anchoring. Lake Monona has more variable bottom conditions and significantly higher boat traffic, which can affect dock design choices.
