Dock & Boat Lift Installation on Lake Waubesa

Dock & Boat Lift Installation on Lake Waubesa

JD Hellenbrand serves Lake Waubesa waterfront property owners with dock and boat lift installation, removal, repair, and seasonal service. We serve the full Lake Waubesa shoreline including the Town of Dunn, the Village of McFarland, and the small section of Madison’s southwest corner that touches the lake.

Lake Waubesa sits in the middle of the Yahara chain, fed by Lake Monona to the north and feeding south through Mud Lake into Lake Kegonsa. It has a different character than the larger Yahara lakes: smaller boat traffic, a more residential shoreline, and a community of long-term lakefront homeowners who care about quiet, well-managed dock work.

You don’t need to be home. We document every property with photos and provide a property report after the work is done. Many Lake Waubesa property owners book us for both spring installation and fall removal at the same time, so the entire seasonal cycle is handled with one point of contact.

What We Know About Lake Waubesa

Lake Waubesa covers 2,074 acres in Dane County with a maximum depth of 38 feet and a mean depth of 17 feet. Compared to Lake Monona to the north (74 feet max) and Lake Mendota (83 feet), Waubesa is a moderately deep lake with substantial shallow areas, particularly in the southern wetlands and along the lake’s edges.

The lake’s water is fed by surface flow from the Yahara River (coming from Lake Monona), three creeks (Swan Creek, Big Spring Creek, and Murphys Creek), and large natural springs in the southern wetlands including Bogholt Deep Spring. Water exits south through Mud Lake to Lake Kegonsa. Levels are managed by the Babcock Park Lock and Dam.

For dock design, Lake Waubesa’s variable bottom gradient matters. Some areas have gradual sand bottoms and reach navigable depth quickly; others have shallower stretches that require longer dock runs to reach a usable depth at the end. The southern end of the lake, near the wetlands and springs, has different bottom conditions than the more developed northeast and east shores.

Lake Waubesa Communities Served

Town of Dunn covers the majority of Lake Waubesa shoreline, particularly along the southwest, south, and southeast portions of the lake. Many of our Lake Waubesa customers are Town of Dunn property owners.

Village of McFarland covers approximately one-third of the lake’s shoreline, primarily on the east side. The Green Lantern boat launch and several Lake Waubesa community gathering spots sit in McFarland.

City of Madison covers a small section of the lake’s northwest corner.

We also serve the Lower Yahara River Trail boardwalk corridor and the Capital Springs State Recreation Area shoreline along the lake’s western edge.

Public Access Points and Why That Matters

Lake Waubesa has multiple public access points including launches at Goodland Park, Babcock Park (north shore), Lake Farm Park, the Bible Camp launch, the Green Lantern launch, and Christy’s Landing. While these don’t directly affect your private dock installation, they do mean Lake Waubesa is a busier launch lake than Lake Kegonsa, and we plan our work around active boat traffic during peak weekends.

Spring Installation Timing on Lake Waubesa

Lake Waubesa typically freezes earlier than Lake Mendota and Lake Monona because it’s smaller and shallower. Ice-out usually arrives in late March or early April. Spring installation runs April through May. Because we run efficient routes on the Yahara chain, we can often schedule Lake Waubesa work in coordination with nearby Lake Kegonsa and Lake Monona installations on the same crew schedule, which keeps your costs down.

Frequently Asked Questions: Lake Waubesa Dock Installation

What dock length do I need on Lake Waubesa?

It depends on your specific location on the lake. Lake Waubesa has variable bottom gradients. Some areas reach sufficient depth for a standard dock length, while others require a longer run to reach navigable depth. We assess your specific shoreline and water depth at the consultation before recommending a length.

Does JD Hellenbrand serve Town of Dunn properties on Lake Waubesa?

Yes. The Town of Dunn covers the majority of Lake Waubesa shoreline, and Town of Dunn properties are core to our Lake Waubesa work. We’re familiar with the Town’s shoreland regulations and the typical bottom and shoreline conditions in this part of the lake.

How does dock removal work in the fall?

We schedule fall removal on a date that works for your property. Our crew handles all disassembly, brings the dock sections out of the water, and stacks them on your property for winter. You don’t need to be home. We send photos of the completed removal and flag any service needs we noticed during the process.

Can you store my dock or lift during the winter?

We handle on-property winter storage as part of fall removal. Dock sections are organized and stacked on your property for efficient spring reinstallation. Specific details on off-property storage availability and pricing should be confirmed during the consultation.

When does Lake Waubesa freeze and clear of ice?

Lake Waubesa typically freezes earlier than Lake Mendota and Lake Monona because it’s smaller and shallower. Freeze-up usually occurs in early to mid December, and ice-out arrives in late March or early April. We monitor conditions and schedule installations accordingly.

Do I need a permit for a dock on Lake Waubesa?

Most residential docks on Lake Waubesa do not require a Wisconsin DNR permit if they meet standard size and configuration thresholds. The Town of Dunn and Village of McFarland may have additional shoreland zoning rules. Madison-side properties follow City of Madison regulations. We flag any applicable requirements during the consultation.

Can JD Hellenbrand serve Lake Waubesa, Lake Monona, and Lake Kegonsa with one schedule?

Yes. Many of our customers own property on multiple Yahara chain lakes, or have neighbors who want to coordinate. We run efficient crew routes on the Yahara chain, which means we can often schedule Lake Waubesa work in coordination with nearby Lake Kegonsa and Lake Monona installations on the same crew schedule.

How does the lock at Babcock Park affect Lake Waubesa water levels?

The Babcock Park Lock and Dam manages Lake Waubesa water levels. Levels are kept within target ranges set by the Wisconsin DNR and the Dane County Lake Level Management Guide. Levels are typically more stable on Lake Waubesa than on Lake Wisconsin (a Wisconsin River reservoir), but seasonal variation does occur. This generally doesn’t affect dock design significantly, but we factor it into floating dock recommendations.
